Class 10 (Science Assignment)
Classification of Living Beings
Living organisms are found in
great variety on Earth. Some are very small, while others are very large. To
study such a huge diversity of organisms easily, scientists classify living
beings into different groups based on their similarities and differences. This
process is called classification.
The branch of biology that deals
with the classification of living organisms is known as taxonomy.
Carolus Linnaeus is regarded as the father of taxonomy because he introduced
the binomial system of naming organisms.
Living beings are classified
into different hierarchical categories such as kingdom, phylum, class, order,
family, genus, and species. Organisms with similar characteristics are placed
together. Classification helps scientists identify organisms, understand their
relationships, and study evolution.
According to the five-kingdom
classification system proposed by Robert H. Whittaker, living organisms are
divided into five kingdoms:
1.
Monera – Includes unicellular
prokaryotic organisms like bacteria.
2.
Protista – Includes
unicellular eukaryotic organisms such as Amoeba and Euglena.
3.
Fungi – Organisms like
mushrooms and yeast that obtain food by absorption.
4.
Plantae – Multicellular
organisms that prepare their own food by photosynthesis.
5.
Animalia – Multicellular
organisms that depend on other organisms for food.
Classification is important
because it makes the study of organisms systematic and easier. It also helps in
understanding the evolutionary relationships among different organisms and
provides universal scientific names for accurate identification.
