Physiological Structure and Life Processes
Living organisms have different structures that help them perform essential life processes. In humans, the body is made up of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. Each organ system performs a specific function, but all systems work together to keep the body alive and healthy.
The digestive system breaks down food into simpler substances that can be absorbed and used by the body. The respiratory system helps in the exchange of gases. Oxygen is taken into the body and carbon dioxide is removed. The circulatory system, consisting mainly of the heart, blood, and blood vessels, transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste materials throughout the body.
The excretory system removes harmful metabolic wastes from the body. The kidneys filter the blood and produce urine. The nervous system controls and coordinates body activities and helps the body respond to changes in the environment. The endocrine system produces hormones that regulate processes such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction.
The reproductive system is responsible for producing gametes and ensuring the continuation of the species. In females, the ovaries produce ova, while in males, the testes produce sperm. All these life processes—nutrition, respiration, circulation, excretion, coordination, growth, and reproduction—are essential for maintaining life.
