Class 10 (Science assignment)

Force and Motion

A. Scientific Reasoning Questions

Answer with reasons and relevant scientific principles.

1.     Why does a passenger in a moving bus tend to fall forward when the driver suddenly applies the brakes?

2.     A cricketer pulls his hands backward while catching a fast-moving ball. Why does this reduce the force experienced by his hands?

3.     A gun recoils backward when a bullet is fired forward. Why does this happen?

4.     Why is it easier to push an empty trolley than a heavily loaded trolley?

5.     Two objects of different masses are dropped simultaneously from the same height in the absence of air resistance. Will they reach the ground at the same time? Give a scientific reason.

6.     When a person jumps from a boat onto the shore, the boat moves backward. Why?

B. Numerical Questions

1.     A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 2 m/s² for 10 seconds. Calculate:
a) its final velocity
b) the distance travelled during this time.

2.     A body of mass 5 kg is moving with an acceleration of 4 m/s². Calculate the force acting on the body.

3.     A ball of mass 0.5 kg is moving with a velocity of 20 m/s. Calculate its momentum.

4.     A motorcycle moving at 15 m/s comes to rest in 5 seconds. Calculate:
a) its acceleration
b) the distance travelled before coming to rest.

5.     A force of 50 N acts on a body of mass 10 kg initially at rest. Calculate:
a) the acceleration produced
b) the velocity of the body after 6 seconds.

6.     A 2 kg object moving at 8 m/s collides with a stationary 3 kg object. If the two objects move together after the collision, calculate their common velocity using the law of conservation of momentum.
